🎭 Join us for a summer vacation filled with laughter and creativity at our San Diego Sketch Comedy Writing Summer Intensive Class! 🎬 hosted by the Exuberant Theatre Company.
Get ready for four days of non-stop fun and learning, culminating in an exciting staged reading at the end. We’ll meet in several different San Diego neighborhoods for class so out-of-towners can get to feel like locals!
Itinerary:
Day 1
The first evening you’ll be welcomed with dinner hosted at the home of Exuberant Theatre Company Artistic Director Sean A. Mulvihill in beautiful Pacific Beach. The first intensive session will begin with a sketch analysis of a wide variety of pieces ranging from Monty Python up to the latest SNL episodes. We will then do a few writing exercises to generate source material for the entire weekend. We’ll conclude the evening by using the writers’ room format to help get each writer started on an outline for a first sketch. The writers’ room is a free-flow comedy generation session which helps look at your idea from every possible angle.
Day 2
In the morning of Day 2, you’ll have free time and a chance to write out a full outline of your first sketch. In the evening of Day 2 we will meet at the vibrant coffee shop Lestat’s in Normal Heights, with ample space for brainstorming and people-watching. We’ll go over each students’ outline in-depth in the writers’ room in order to help you solidify the beats for your script writing. After class it may be a late night as writers will be asked to hand in their first draft the following day. Luckily Lestat’s is open til midnight.
Day 3
Day 3 you will have the morning to perhaps enjoy a San Diego bayside stroll before we meet for class at the picnic tables in the gorgeous Crown Point Park on Mission Bay. We will read our sketches aloud and give each writer ample time to notate specific rewrites to complete.
In the afternoon you’ll have time to do your rewrites, and in the evening the option to attend an improv or sketch comedy show in town with the group.
Day 4
Day 4 will be a full day with two sessions held at the Winslow Conference Rooms in University Heights. The morning will be a chance to read the 2nd drafts of sketches aloud before launching into final rewrites. We will break for the afternoon, then the evening session will consist of rehearsals and will culminate in a staged reading of the sketches. You will have the option to have your sketches filmed for posterity.
